about
This song is about sitting in a cocoon of grief, anger, frustration and negative thoughts; and rather than trying to address and fix the problem, you choose to just sit in the mess and let it wash over and all around you. It’s not a self-help song; it’s an angry ‘fuck this’ song. It references alcohol, addiction, and vices that fuel the fire. There are images in my mind of walking along a hellish beach at dawn with red water and nightmarish-looking seagulls overhead, and waiting on a train track in the middle of a frigid desert. There are concepts alluded to like existentialism, masochism and the biological need to be loved. The same way we chase the feeling of happiness, I wanted to write a song about the unspoken desire we sometimes have to be angry and in pain, just to see what it feels like.
Melt This Way is a blend of progressive jazz rock, metal fusion and grungy soul. The outro, with its repetitive, modal line and sudden shift in time signature is a nod to Tigran Hamasyan’s Armenian jazz/folk music, while the intro is inspired by Australian band Arcing Wires, particularly their tune ‘Catacaustic’. The choruses I wrote with Coldplay in mind, while the verses I thought of David Byrne, Muse and Radiohead.
lyrics
Verse 1- It’s my time, high time
This time I’ll wait
Waiting for something to hit
Hits so smooth
Like top shelf liquor
But stings like a bite Is this love my time?
Is it on my time?
Chorus- I’ll wait
For something hard
Like a calloused hand
Hits me sharp
Like fingers cold
And shards so deep, deep
Verse 2- I want to feel this love on my skin
Not paper thin
Thick like molasses
Tar on the highway
Melting insects on the dashboard
Will I melt this way?
I wanna melt this way
Chorus- Maybe it’s time
To cut through the bullshit
Citrus squeeze on wounds so deep
Spiders hide in corners
Just as we do
Post Chorus- When it’s time
High time, it’s this time
Verse 3- Fuck the liquor
Give me something harder
Something that’ll last
Maybe a love like this
Chorus- Ooh...
Is it time?
I think it’s time to melt this way, way...
